It's May Day* --
MaypoleCelebrated around the world and throughout history: May 1st is the 121st day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (122nd in leap years).

Actually, the International Distress Call is spelled "maeday"...not MAY day. Just thought you might like to know.

Care to give us a citation? I find absolutely no references to support your claim. If you clicked on the link you will see that the article does cite the French origin of the word, "m'aidez", which means "help me."

Sorry...I can't readily give you a citation, but will look for one. A million years ago, when I was being given emergency radio training, in case the radio man in our platoon got wasted, we were taught that it was "maeday" and should be sent that way if we had to "morse" it. I don't even know if they teach morse code anymore, but I'm sure there are some old radio guys out there who can confirm what I was taught.
