Apple adopts Mo'time's standard :-)

(This post will be useful for all Mo’timers to read, not just Apple Macintosh users.)

The new version of Apple's OSX for the Macintosh, also known as Tiger, has implemented an instant messaging standard that supports full integration with Mo'time's built-in chatting and alerting system.

Mo’time’s system is based on Tipic’s instant messaging technology and utilizes the Jabber/XMPP protocol. Tipic, the company behind Mo'time, was among the first companies to choose this open standard and we are gratified that Apple is now supporting XMPP, too. Marco Palombi, Tipic's CEO, was on the Board of Jabber Software Foundation in 2002/3.

Some of you may not even be aware of how useful (and cool) our built-in instant messaging is!

Why use Mo’time’s IM system? First and foremost, most users subscribe to their favorite Mo’time blogs by clicking on the subscribe link in the top section of the left column of “standard” Mo’time blogs. If you keep the instant messenger open while you are logged-in to Mo’time, even if you are busy working on other things, whenever somebody posts or comments on a blog in your subscription list, the IM system sends you an immediate alert!

You also get alerts, in real time, when someone sends you a Mo’Mail (a private message).

Many people subscribe just to the comments section of their own blogs, so that they are alerted when they get comments. (You can always read a review of all your subscriptions in your Digest.)

How to get setup: Every logged-in Mo'time member is automatically logged-in to the instant messaging system. You can open up this "chat" window in one of 4 ways:

(1) Click on the Open IM client link on the same line as the Community link on the Mo’time home page (works on Internet Explorer for Windows and Firefox/Mozilla on all systems);

(2) Download, install and open the TipicIM client from the Tipic website (for Windows only);

(3) On compatible mobile phones and PDA’s you can install TipicME, also available on the Tipic website; and

(4) Use iChat AV (3.0), included in Tiger, the new Macintosh OS (10.4), or any other Jabber-compatible IM client.

Using iChat AV: Tiger users should open up their iChat application, and enable Jabber in the setup process. When creating a new account, under Account type, simply choose Jabber, enter your Mo’time username@motime.com, your regular Mo’time password and you are set up.

Chatting with other Mo’timers: When you are logged-in, you are automatically logged-in to the IM system, too. Your nick, or ID, is your Mo’time username plus @motime.com. NOTE: This is not an email address, but the standard format for Jabber IM usernames!

Check out the list of "Members logged-in” by clicking on the link on the lower right portion of the home page. Then simply add the person you want to chat to your buddy list in this format: username@motime.com. Encourage your blog pals to use this system when they login!

If you are using the TipicIM desktop application (or any of the other Jabber-compatible applications), you can create chatrooms for group chats, too.

i have a question that i'll just post in this comment area...i can see my blog when i log in, but my friends can't. it brings them to a page that says they r logged in, and to click to log out. what could be causing that and how can i fix that?

Not_Douche: It seems as though you have created a private blog, visible only to members. Did you do this on purpose?

From your blog's editor interface, in the "Blogs" tab, follow this path: "Blogs-> Settings-> Access..."

On the access page you can review the access settings for the blog.

I'm using a HTTP proxy which requires a username and password, does Tipic IM allow this?

No, sorry you cannot use the desktop version through a proxy. But you can still use the browser-based Web IM, although you have less controls. From the home of motime when you are logged-in, find the IM chat link on the same line as Community. Click to open and voilà. It is great for those who want to just open a chat from any connected computer, without any downloads, proxy or firewall issues.
