The Unlogged Visitor question

It has come to the management's attention that there is some dissatisfaction within the ranks about the moniker "Unlogged visitor" that appears in the comments of those sad souls that won't take the measly 2 minutes that are required to register and pick a nice name for themselves. (That way, they can even put their non-Mo'time blog or "personal space" as their default and every time they comment, the little house on the prairie icon is automatically linked to their own little patch of Net.)

So, seeing as though I can't change the system right now, I would like to know if changing the name would help. What would you like to see instead of "Unlogged visitor"? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Really.

Drat. I wanted to comment as unlogged visitor on this one.

Since "unlogged visitor" covers both those who aren't registered in Motime and those who aren't logged in, we could always use "mysterious stranger"

If you wanted to really freak people out, you could replace the ip with their browser/os/location info.

"How did you know I'm using Opera on Linux, from New York?! Are you reading my mind?! Honestly, that time in Tijuana was the only time!"

Mysterious Stranger would creep me out. I'd always be expecting my readers to prove the world is a flit of solipsistic chaos.

Well, they do that anyway.

Hello, Howard. It's me, the one who is most likely the snarky source of the "dissatisfaction within the ranks". I have no right to complain. Unlike Rusty and a number of others, I enjoy Mo'time's services for free, and a damn fine service it is.

But since you ask, let me be specific about what I see not as "dissatisfaction" but as an opportunity to be more inviting to non-Mo'timers who would like to participate in a small way in this fine place.

It's been my observation that those non-Mo'timers who drop by and wish to leave a spontaneous comment probably don't want to interrupt their spontaneity to register, and most seem to prefer just to comment and go. The current Mo'time comment box allows room for the unlogged commenter's home web address, but no place for the commenter to leave his or her name. I would argue that the name is more important than the (probably) non-Motime web address, and all it would require is one more little info box that replaces "Unlogged Visitor".

That's not possible without writing some code; I understand that. But would it be useful to replace "Unlogged Visitor" with "Don't forget to leave your name"? Or would that just look stupid? Or do I just look stupid? Frankly, I think I would prefer to be writing a stupid post right now.

Good idea. That's what I'll do.

You can change Unlogged Visitor by Anonymous, or let the people put a temporary nickname as in blogger :-)

hangs Howard!

"Future Nemesis"

"Internet Grafitti Artist"

"Your Biggest Fan"

No, no. Wait. Masked Bandit. I want a masked bandit to leave me a message on my blog. I would like the default avatar to be a pongo rendition of a masked bandit. Get on it, Howard!

Truthfully, I don't have a problem with the moniker "Unlogged visitor" (but if you wanna go with say, "Special Guest" or something, that's fine). My issue is more that no matter how you slice it, it's often a euphemism for "troll." (Well, one in particular, anyway.)

I know that was a separate thread, but is there a non-super-technical solution for THAT?

For the trolls, I have nothing up my sleeve or anywhere else for that matter.

The name ideas are definitely inspiring some serious consideration, as well as a Pongo avatar instead of the boring gray question mark.

Keep 'em coming, but we are getting somewhere. And maybe somewhere will turn out to be right here.

How about "whiney suck baby"... since, as you pointed out, they're likely to complain about the "unlogged visitor" LONGER than it takes to become a logged one!! ;)

Hey, musical avatars. Great idea! Add a "click here to make this your permanent avatar" button. Or if that's too much coding, ask all these talented Mo'timers to submit their Guest Avatar images, and change it once a month. I'm in for October.

What about Mo'nonymous? I liked LITMs too.

Not a whiney suck baby myself but something does need to change with the avatar while you're messing around in there.

Folks, why are we complaining about this. It is fine as it is. If you really want people to use a name, put a register button next to "Name:". The real problem I am seeing that irritates the living bejesus out of me is that commercialism is starting to pop up. Stores. Advertisements. Heck. We even have our own book seller. There used to be a day in the very beginning till now when it was fun discovering new blogs. Now, a quarter of those blogs are selling something. I just don't want our glorious corner of the world wide web to turn into a FaceCrap or a MyFarce simile. Nuff said.

This is great. Thanks for the opinions. I do like the idea of changing the name and avatar once a month or so... Let me think about that for a bit and then we can use that as a temporary solution. I say solution, because it does seem like there is a basic consensus that the "UV" issue is due, at the very least, for some kind of update. We are bored with it.

psmartin... I agree about the creeping commercialism. apart from the few googly things spread around, that honestly are not really worth the space that they take up in the context of the pages in which they are placed, if you see any commercial or spam blogs *here*, please send me a mo'mail about them immediately!

It is OK for a "pro" subscriber to use his or her blog for blatantly commercial purposes. These may be recognized by the lack of the Mo'time bar on the top of the blog page. It is not OK for a free Mo'timer to do so. Let me know.

Back to the main issue for a second... actually adding the name field would not be so hard to do, but in this moment I have lack of resources to do anything on Mo'time except to fix broken stuff. Mo'time is a very small property in the context of a bigger company and, unfortunately, is waiting in the wings until I can get some resources on the job. That's why I'd like to take this compromise road, and play with the existing system until I can implement something more satisfactory.

Thanks for understanding (if, in fact, you do). :)

hey, thanks to coopergreen for the first new UV avatar, celebrating hockey, halloween and anonymity!

And congrats to Rusty for winning the moniker contest... those formerly unlogged ones are now Mo'nonymous.

I'm accepting artwork and names for November... and all of the other names already mentioned are still in contention.

You're a winner all right, Rusty, with all those Shriners fondling your legs. It doesn't get much better than that.

How come none of them are wearing hockey masks?
